This is a comic I did for what ended up being the Summer issue of the Eisner nominated newspaper, the Columbus Scribbler. I’ve reformatted it to fit on the site as it’s original form was made to work with a full newspaper page. I’m really enjoying these characters:)

This is a comic I did for the Fall issue of the Eisner nominated newspaper, the Columbus Scribbler. It was originally the center spread for the issue and I’ve reformatted it to fit on the site. I had a ton of fun with this comic.
The character design of Kid Starfish originated from a dream I had in my early twenties. When I awoke, I ran to my drawing board and drew him up on a piece of scrap paper. He’s been hanging out in my file cabinet ever since, waiting for a story. He’s a character that I’d always think about but, never have the time to do anything with. That’s how it works sometimes, things just have to line up. Now that he’s had his first adventure, I’m sure more are going to follow:)
When I came up with this ending I instantly knew it wasn’t family-friendly enough for the Columbus Scribbler but, I thought it was funny enough to draw out. It does echo back to the old Dick Tracy strips, that this comic is based on, where Tracy guns down criminals.
Anyway, thought you all would enjoy seeing how different a story can change with just a few panel changes at the end.

I had come up with the name “Scoops McKinsey” years ago and written it down in a notebook and for whatever reason the name stuck with me and kept nagging at me (it happens sometimes). When I decided I wanted to do a Dick Tracy type story it seemed like the perfect opportunity to finally use the character. I had a lot of fun with the tale, Dick Tracy was one of my favorites as a kid.
No Applewood Canyon this week as I spent last week wrapping up a few comics to send off to the printer and ran out of time to finish up this week’s installment. Don’t worry though, it’ll be back next week.

We’re back! A new year and new comics!
This one was featured in our side project, a free comics newspaper called the Columbus Scribbler, which can be viewed at ColumbusScribbler.com. Although, in the paper it’s a black and white strip. I personally like this version better, I think the red adds a nice accent to it.
Anyway, Happy New Year everyone! Derek and I are excited to start another year of making these comics for you all, we hope you continue to enjoy them:)
