This method of teaching is not the wisest approach when dealing with high school students. I learned absolutely nothing in that practice room, mainly due to the fact that I had no real guidance to begin with.
I probably spent a week trying to decipher the music book and instrument before me but, at a certain point I just gave up. I spent more time in the practice room drawing comics and taking naps than actually practicing the baritone. Which my music teacher was probably fine with since I wasn’t in the music room banging on drums. I guess it was a win win. When the concert date finally came I mimed most of my part. To this day I still can’t read music. Oh well.
